For their 2016 line-up, SCOTT have gone all-in for the new plus-sized wheels and their established models, the Scale, Genius, Genius LT and E-Genius all boast the new 27.5+ tyre sizes, alongside the ever-consistent 27.5″ and 29″ versions. Here’s an overview of the plus-size collection, and while you’re at it, why not check out our First Ride review of the SCOTT Genius?

Scott Scale

From now on, you’ll find the SCOTT Scale in its new incarnation as the Scale 710 Plus and the Scale 720 Plus. Both models take the same alloy frame with the plus-tyre compatible Boost 148 rear hub spacing standard.

There are two specs to choose from on the SCOTT Scale and four frame sizes. The shown above is the SCOTT Scale 710.
Der Boost 148-Hinterbau bietet ausreichend Platz für Plusreifen.
The Boost 148 rear gives clearance for plus-size tyres.

The Scale has four frame sizes on offer, ranging from small to XL. When it comes to the geometry of this hardtail, there are a few figures that stand out: the slack 67.6° head angle; the chainstay – pretty short at just 439mm – and the rather more compact reach of just 412mm for a medium sized frame. This led us to speculate on its potentially playful and lively riding characteristics, but we had to wait until the first test ride before we could see if it really lived up to this.

Internally routed cables have now become somewhat of an industry standard.
Both builds feature quite a few Syncros parts.

  • SCOTT Genius Plus

Now available in three models, the SCOTT Genius heralds the Genius 720 Plus, Genius 710 Plus and the Genius 700 Tuned Plus – the top model of the trio. Last year’s carbon frame has remained virtually unchanged apart from the head angle, which has been slackened by 1.5° with an angled headset. The aluminium rear, on the other hand, is brand new and thanks to the Boost 148 standard, it now offers enough clearance for tyres of up to 3.0″.

On 2.8″ plus-size tyres, the Genius Plus gives 140 mm travel at the front and 130mm at the rear.
The Genius Plus’s geometry can be adjusted with the Flip-Chip on the mount of the rear shock.

The geometry of the Genius Plus can be altered from the rear shock mount, resulting in 0.5° changes to both the head and seat angle, as well as slacking off the reach by 4mm in one of the settings. The Genius Plus has 130mm travel at the rear and 140mm at the front. It will be available in four sizes, ranging from small to extra large.

The FOX NUDE shock with the new EVOL sleeve found on the 710 and 700 models can be locked out alongside the fork from the bar-mounted remote.
Am Topmodell sind Syncros TR1.5 Plus-Felgen verbaut.
The line’s top model gets the Syncros TR1.5 Plus rims.

    • SCOTT Genius LT Plus

This long-travel incarnation of the Genius offers 160mm front and rear travel and will be available in three different build specs. With an even slacker head angle than the Genius, and a spec that’s even more downhill orientated, SCOTT aren’t hiding the fact that this bike has been devised for maximum fun and stable handling on descents. Thanks to the Boost rear hub spacing, the Genius LT Plus welcomes plus-size tyres as well without forsaking its compact rear end – the chainstay is just 448mm. Just like the Genius, the head and seat angles can be altered by 0.5° using the Flip-Chip on the shock mount.

With 160 mm travel and a weight of just 12.70kg, it’s blatant that the SCOTT Genius LT Plus is made for bombing downhill.
SCOTT have a keen eye for details and didn’t sacrifice internal cable routing.
The shock with the EVOL sleeve has been tuned to match the rear kinetics of the Genius LT and can be adjusted from the under-the-bar-mounted TwinLoc remote.

By presenting eight models at once – or eleven if you include the E-Genius models – which all take plus-size tyres, SCOTT have clearly embraced this emerging tyre size as the next logical step in the evolution of mountain bikes. While SCOTT haven’t completely forsaken traditional tyre sizes and continue to offer those, this leap forwards to the new standard is testament to the Swiss team’s belief in the benefits posed by these wider tyres. And, as any fan of our reviews will know, it’s a belief that we wholeheartedly agree with.

There are currently no definite prices regarding the 2016 line-up from SCOTT.
