If you are looking for more range from your 1x drivetrain but want to retain your 10 speed drivetrain, there are now a host of cassettes and ‘extended range’ add-ons available. These range from complete cassettes to add-on oversized sprockets. Praxis have now joined the game with a beautifully CNC’ed 11-40T wide range cassette for a standard 10 speed freehub, and we have one to test.

The 11-40 Wide Range Cassette is manufactured the two largest rings from 7075-T6 aluminium using hard anodizing for durability, while the remaining rings are made from stamped steel. By mounting the four largest rings on an aluminium spider Praxis have kept the weight down to just 321g.

Retailing for £99.99 or $130 the Praxis offers the following ratios 11-13-15-17-19-21-24-28-34-40 and is compatible with both Shimano and SRAM mid cage and long cage mechs. Praxis have chosen to limit the largest sprocket size to a 40 tooth, as this greatly extends the range of ratios available while reducing the need to mess around with B-tension screws and limits the ‘big step’ in shifting. This should also mean that if you have a long cage deralieur, you should be able to use the Praxis cassette with a twin chainring setup too.

Our impressions

If you are looking for a wider gear range, but don’t want to have to modify your existing ten speed setup or suffer big jumps in your shifting, the Praxis 11-40t Cassette could be just what you are looking for. We have mounted this cassette on a long term test bike to see how durable the aluminium rings prove to be under some extreme use.
