SRAM will be releasing an 11-speed drivetrain with all-new components. It will also be available as a 2×11 system, in both grip and trigger shift systems. Additionally, there will be a new 2×10 system under the GX name, replacing the X.7 and X.9.

The SRAM GX drivetrain.

Just like the automotive industry, mountain bike technology trickles down from the top. The SRAM GX groupset might be the most important technology to make it’s way onto reasonably affordable bikes in recent years. Those who are fortunate enough have been enjoying the benefits of SRAM‘s 1×11 drivetrains for a few years now. It eliminates the need for the front derailleur, saves weight and simplifies shifting. You lose some gear range but for most people the advantages have far outweighed that minor inconvenience.

These are the kind of differences that any rider will appreciate, not just the elite. Unfortunately the cost was outside many rider’s budgets. The desirability of this upgrade spawned low-cost 10-speed conversion kits that have gotten hugely popular. Those work well, but the best performing drivetrains are the ones designed as a complete set, and that’s where the GX groupsets come in.

You’re probably wondering, HOW MUCH IS IT?

The 1×11 version in comparison (without BB):

XX1 (team) – 1.419 g$ 1,622
X1 (1400) – 1.630 g$ 1,066
GX (1400) – 1.650 g$ 564

That’s an impressive upgrade for around 1/3 of the retail price of SRAM‘s XX1, with nearly the same weight as X1. Expect to see these groupsets on many upcoming bikes. SRAM have used different materials (no carbon fiber) and different manufacturing techniques to bring the cost down but have focused on retaining the vital technologies that improve the riding experience.

GX 1x11 FULL PIN™ Cassette

The one-piece machined X01 cassette was one of the most prohibitive parts of the current 1-by drivetrains cost-wise. The GX cassette is constructed with eleven lightweight, stamped steel cogs held together with 123 stainless steel pins. This allows for a reasonable price and increased durability!
