Cold and wet outside? Stay in and curl up by the fire? No need – just listen to mom and put on a jacket. That’s why we tested two multisport jackets from Squamish: the 7mesh Guardian Apex and the 7mesh Guardian Air, both designed for real adventures in the worst conditions. Can these jackets actually justify their seriously high price tags? We found out.

Cold, wet, windy – the kind of weather that makes even the hardiest outdoor fans consider staying on the couch. But it’s in these conditions that true high-end technical apparel separates itself from mere fashion pieces.

7mesh, based in Squamish, British Columbia, operate in a region not just known for world-class trails but also for an impressive number of rainy days. Ideal conditions to develop jackets that don’t just work on the bike but also shine while hiking, running, or navigating the early-morning “rainforest” of downtown streets and lamp posts.

The brand name 7mesh pays tribute to the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw, the Squamish Nation, on whose traditional territory the company was founded. With the Guardian Apex and the Guardian Air, 7mesh introduce two jackets that share the same performance ambition, though with noticeably different characters. The Apex aims to be a full-on rain and storm barrier capable of shrugging off anything the weather throws at it, whereas the Air promises to deliver similar capability in a significantly lighter package.

But how do these two Canadian jackets perform when the rain starts coming in sideways? And more importantly: are they worth their premium price tags of € 550 and € 450?

Air stays air — and the 7mesh Guardian Air feels exactly like that.
At 1.85 m tall, our model wears a size L.

The 7mesh Guardian Apex comes in at € 550 and is available in three colours:

  • Lake Blue – a clear, vibrant blue
  • Black – classic and understated
  • Supernova – a bright, almost radioactive orange

The Guardian Air costs € 450 and is offered in two colour options:

  • Graphite – a subtle dark grey
  • Deep Sea – a rich, deep blue tone

Both jackets come in gender-specific cuts and are available in sizes XS to XXL.

The size M fit our first 1.82 m tall tester perfectly.
The second tester (measuring 1.93 m tall) stuck with L and described the fit as “spot on.” The jackets run slightly generous in the sleeves and around the hips, without feeling bulky or getting in the way during activities.

Materials & Features – Two Jackets, One Purpose

7mesh use the PFAS-free GORE-TEX ePE membrane for both jackets. PFAS – per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances – are popular for their ability to repel water and oils, but they break down extremely slowly and persist in the environment. The ePE membrane is designed as a more sustainable alternative while still providing robust weather protection. Both jackets pair it with a durable nylon outer fabric and a recycled inner lining. The Air relies on a lightweight 15D nylon for minimal weight, while the Apex uses a tougher 40D nylon for added abrasion resistance and protection.

Small but clever: both jackets pack easily into their own internal pocket. Here’s the Air version.

Looking at the features, the Apex and Air are clearly of the same species – one a bit sturdier, the other lighter on its feet. Both come with a comfortable, helmet-compatible hood that can be fully tucked away via a snap closure system. Both compress down to the size of a small lunch box using the StashSystem and can be strapped – slightly fiddly but reliably – onto the outside of the frame or handlebar via two loops. They also share the 360° articulation pattern, designed to promote natural movement during vigorous activity.

The Apex adds underarm ventilation zippers, which is ideal for long, warm climbs. The Air, meanwhile, offers an additional internal pocket and feels like the thinner, more flexible sibling overall.

Our model discovered ventilation zippers under the arms of the 7mesh Apex.

In the end, you’re looking at two jackets cut from the same cloth but still with distinct characteristics: the Apex takes on the role of the weatherproof bodyguard, while the Air is the light, sporty windbreaker you hardly notice yet always have with you.

One caveat: care is key. Both jackets should be washed at 40 °C on a gentle cycle, using liquid detergent and strictly no fabric softener.

The 7mesh Guardian Apex and 7mesh Guardian Air on Test – Warm, Weatherproof, and Flexible

Spoiler: Out on the eMTB during our so-called golden autumn, the Guardian Apex really showed what it’s capable of. Even with multiple layers underneath – at 2 °C (yes, that’s how cold our autumn gets…) – consisting of a baselayer, shirt, hoodie, and another hoodie, the Apex jacket fits comfortably without feeling bulky. The hood fits easily over a helmet, and two hem straps let you cinch it down so no cold air sneaks in from below.

Freedom of movement remains excellent in all situations, whether you’re in an aggressive attack position on the bike or curled up in the turtle pose after an unplanned dismount. The extended rear provides reliable coverage over the lower back without coming anywhere near the rear wheel. The sleeves can be adjusted quickly even with gloves on, and the zippers remain easy to operate with cold or gloved fingers.

The sleeves can be individually adjusted – a real bonus when you’re riding with gloves and want everything to sit cleanly and snug.

In testing, the Guardian Apex proves itself as a robust, reliably wind- and waterproof companion for winter trail rides. The high collar offers solid protection for the neck, and the outer material shrugs off encounters with thorns and branches without complaint. Even when covered in mud, it still looks stylish thanks to the Supernova and Lake Blue colour options, and the workmanship is exactly what you’d expect at this price point.

The highlight: packability. On late-summer evenings, when you suddenly find that you’re wearing one layer too many, or need an extra one for the ride home, you can stuff the jacket into itself in seconds and strap it to your handlebar or frame. Very cool!

7mesh Guardian Air – Light and Sporty

The Guardian Air feels noticeably thinner and airier. It can also be worn comfortably over multiple layers and, thanks to the reduced material thickness, still offers excellent freedom of movement.

The two-way zipper – just like on the Apex – is practical, though it can feel a bit fiddly in use. The forearm sleeve adjustment, which the Apex also features, works brilliantly and helps reduce the unpleasant drafts that like to sneak up the sleeves and into the jacket.

The Air has the same pack size as the Apex, but its ultra-thin fabric makes the fit feel surprisingly roomy. The material is also noticeably louder, producing a plastic-like rustling sound when you move, which you may or may not appreciate. It’s a jacket you can definitely use in winter if you build a proper layering system underneath, but for us it’s an even better choice during summer and the transitional seasons.

Conclusion on the 7mesh Guardian Apex and 7mesh Guardian Air Jackets

The 7mesh Guardian Apex and Guardian Air show just what well-designed multisport jackets are capable of. The Apex offers reliable weather protection, impressive durability, and a cut that allows maximum freedom of movement even on technical trails. The Air is the lighter, more breathable sibling for warm days and fast-paced efforts. Both pack down small, feature clever design details, and offer high-quality workmanship. The price is steep, but for those who stay outdoors in inclement weather and value long-lasting performance, the investment is well justified.
