The riders started their second day under the shade and coolness of the paddock roof at the IFEJA premises in Jaén, but they were soon feeling the heat as they undertook a mammoth 2,631 metres of climbing and 76.8 kilometres of tough terrain. With arduous climbs and technical descents it was sure to stretch the field. After Topeak Ergon’s clean sweep yesterday it was the turn of Periklis Ilias and Tiago Ferreira of Team Protek by Marconi to take centre stage, they completed the stage in 3:33:03. They were followed home by Matthias Pfrommer and Markus Kaufmann who finished in a time of 3:33:10 for Centurion Vaude. Once again event favorites and Topeak Ergon riders Sally Bigham and Katrin Leumann took the top spot with a time of 4:16:23 and extended their gap out front. In the men’s overall Periklis Ilias and Tiago Ferreira take the lead from Hynek and Lakata who drop to 3rd overall after finishing the stage 4th, nearly 3 minutes back.
