Best in test – Specialized 2FO Cliplite

If the battle of closure systems supremacy were compared to knife fight, then BOA wouldn’t just be a gun, it would be a fully tooled-up tank. In this group test, BOA kicks ass – hands down the best system. The Specialized 2FO Cliplite is the only shoe in this test that uses BOA closures, one over the lower foot and one at the ankle cuff, and they work exceptionally well. The thin steel cords allow precise fitment and on the fly adjustment, allowing you to crank the shoe up for fast paced action, or chill with a little more slack. Should they get damaged, replacements are easily available as a serviceable part. Like a stripped out race car, the 2FO Cliplite boast minimal padding so a good fit is essential for comfortable riding, but the positive is that the shoes are very compact and precise, feeling racy and aggressive on the pedals.

The shoe is quite stiff so long walks are not the most comfortable, but the toe does articulate well. We love the Landing Strip cleat pocket with graduated markings, giving a huge range of precise adjustment and massive clearance for a full range of cleat positions. The wide pocket also meant we experienced no issues at all with pedal incompatibility. The specialized is the lightest shoe in the test at just 448 g, and was very close to the class leading Shimano when it comes to water absorption, taking on just 57 ml of water per shoe. The materials and build quality are all top-drawer, the moulded toe construction shrugs off rocks strikes well and the small vents are just enough to stop sweat buildup during the summer months without letting in the winter chill. The 2FO Cliplite is almost perfect, only the Slip Not compound sole lets the side down a little in the mud, where it, well, slipped. A more aggressive tread would be welcomed by riders who regularly push or hike in slippery terrain.

The Specialized 2FO Cliplite strike a perfect balance of versatility, performance, and a great fit. The feel on the pedals is very sensitive, and power transfer is huge. For riders looking for an everyday trail shoe that can handle some racing, the 2FO Cliplite is the best out there!
