Shimano SH-ME7

Shimano make tough shoes, it’s a fact. The original Shimano DX ‘stormtrooper clipless shoes were so indestructible that Shimano stopped making them for fear that nobody would need to buy riding shoes ever again. Ok, that’s a lie, but Shimano do understand reliability. The new €219.95 SH-ME7 is their flagship high-performance shoe, blending XC performance with a super aggressive rugged exterior. The fit of the shoe is compact and racy, with a single sided tongue to ensure a uniform and close fit. All testers found the fit easy to adjust with the thin lace and a ratcheted top strap that holds the foot in a comfortable vice like grip. We approve of the low-profile ratchet after ripping off more prominent ratchets in the past. The design of the shoe conforms well around the ankle with a neoprene cuff, which combined with the lace shield keeps the bad weather outside of the shoes where it belongs.

The mesh toe box provides excellent ventilation in the summer, but does allow water in on wet days. The cleat pocket is long and open allowing total control over where the cleats sit in the channel and we experienced no issues with any pedal system, certainly the easiest shoes to guide in and out in the group. If you face some hike-a-bike, the SH-ME7 is well up for the task, the articulated toe section allows the shoe to bend and the MICHELIN® high-performance, dual-density rubber sole grips like shit to a blanket on all surfaces. The torbal shank is targeted more towards efficiency, providing a stiff and powerful feel on the pedals. The Shimano’s take the honour of absorbing the least water of all the shoes, drying out fast. The only real complaints were that the narrow last was a little uncomfortable for some testers and the price is a little eye-watering. Even after a season of use, the shoes still look great, showing a tough and rugged build quality that shrugged off the worst of the Scottish conditions.

The Shimano SH-ME7 is a brilliant shoe, a great all-rounder for someone looking for XC performance wrapped in an aggressive shell. With their great closure system, a precise fit is easy to achieve, but they do come at a high price.
