Fi’zik Artica X5X

The Fi’zi:k Artica X5 shoes share the same slim profile uppers as the road Artica R5 version so the aesthetic is definitely more svelte than rugged. The shoe’s smooth, breathable and waterproof outer is sealed with a waterproof zip which means that it doesn’t have anywhere for mud to collect and cleans easily. The outer has some flexibility but this means that it follows the shape of your foot, rather than giving any extra room and the zipper closure means that there is no way to adjust the width of the boot to suit your foot or sock choice.

The very fitted last of the Artica X5 means that it suits riders with narrow feet the best. Average width feet will fit fine, with room for blood to circulate in your toes but thick socks are a no go. The fleece lining and aluminium insulated insole do provide plenty of warmth, so depending on the conditions that you ride in, you may not feel the need for more insulation.

The mountain bike specific sole has a carbon reinforced nylon outsole which gives a good balance of support and power transfer without being too stiff. The upside of this form fitted boot is that, no matter how hard you crank those pedals or hike up a steep slope, the Artica X5 stays in place. As long as it’s comfortable, a fitted shoe means that your foot can relax as you pedal, reducing fatigue.
Despite its lightweight looks, the Fi’zi:k Artica X5 was the second heaviest on test but was joint top for its low water intake after being submerged. Drying time was mid-table at about 35% reduction on water over 24 hrs.

Conclusion

The Fi’zi:k Artica X5 is a good multi-discipline winter boot with understated looks The fitted form is a performance asset as long as you have fairly narrow feet and don’t need any further insulation.
