Deuter have cemented a position on the backs of many riders and their backpacks surely rank in the list of the classics. The Deuter Compact EXP 16 draws on the brand’s long-term experience to render it a versatile model. The main compartment can be expanded by 2.5 litres, and the Deuter easily complies to house our day-ride essentials. The main pocket also has a smaller compartment at the front, two open side pockets and various compartments inside. There are also two hip pockets for small items like keys, a penknife or some rabbit food.

On the sides there are two cinch straps that’ll sort out the weight distribution so it sits on your hips. At the bottom you’ll find a pocket for the helmet net and rain cover.

The feeling of the Deuter on your back is really easy to get used to. The shoulder straps are netted and lightweight so your chest won’t overheat. The ‘Air Stripes’ ventilation system keeps the pressure off your spine, spreads the load and reduces sweatiness on sweat-plagued contact points. So even though Deuter have essentially honed in on smaller contact areas, there were no pressure points and the backpack sat firmly in place without swaying.

Pivotal to this bag’s features is its ability for adjustment – although this comes at the cost of weight. Undeniably a great backpack with a great concept, the Deuter Compact EXP 16 is a no-brainer for a daypack.
