Ergon BA3 Evo

It’s all in the name when it comes to Ergon, a brand who strive for the ultimate ergonomics in their designs. A first glance at the Ergon BA3 confirms that this bag is no exception: with two different sizes for the shoulder strap system and a four-step adjustment for the length of the bag, Ergon have well and truly covered not only their backs but the whole riding community.

There’s a contour fit bar that runs along your lower back and can be adjusted to suit your size.

Immaculately made, the Ergon BA3 is crammed with features – but as is often the case, less is sometimes more and not all of the features were able to convince us during our testing.
There’s one big main compartment with two mesh inner pockets, a bladder compartment and spacious one for organizing. The volume is set at 15 litres, but can be expanded to 17 litres. However, it’s a compact design and the load is already fairly removed from your immediate back, so when you open the expander zip the load retreats even further away from your body.

When the backpack is full, the adjustable carrier system and the small contact zone between the pack and your back meant that the load wasn’t ideally distributed, and the backpack was unsteady. The helmet pocket is the BA3’s saving grace: super secure, there’s an integrated zip pocket, enough space for protectors and bit of clothing like gloves or a gilet that you’re likely to stow away on-the-fly. The outer material is really hard-wearing and unlikely to be perturbed by a bit of grime.

Found at the back of the bag, the organiser pocket is pretty limited for small items, and it’s hard to get at once the main pocket is full. Fortunately there are two long, narrow pockets that are ideal for pumps.

The right size for a day ride, the Ergon BA3 Evo presents a viable option. Initially we’d expected its strengths to lie in comfort – but we were proven wrong. One asset is that it comes in two different sizes and features a length-adjustable back; it’s wise to try before you buy here. Of course, all of this R&D comes with a cost, so expect to shell out € 140 for the high-end Ergon.
