Best in test: Specialized Ambush ANGi

The Specialized Ambush is a true classic in this category. At first glance, the latest version of Spesh’s trail lid looks a lot like its predecessor, and only when taking a closer look will you spot the new features. The first thing you’ll notice is the distinctive MIPS logo. The 2019 version is actually the first version of the Ambush that features the popular Swedish safety system. The custom MIPS SL works exactly like the standard version, with the only difference being that the system is integrated directly into the pads and therefore has no negative effect on the excellent ventilation of the helmet.

With the ANGi system (Angular and G-Force indicator), the Ambush offers an entirely new safety system. The ANGi sensor on the back of the helmet is programmed to detect a crash and notify a pre-selected emergency contact using the Specialized Ride App. While the innovative service is free of charge for the first year, Specialized charges a significant € 29.99 per year once the trial period is over.

Weighing in at just 308 g, the Ambush ANGi is the lightest helmet in our test and also the one which offers the best ventilation. The only drawback is that the base of the helmet is not entirely covered with a shell to protect the EPS foam. The visor allows for easy on-the-fly adjustments with the dia integrated directly into the helmet shell. With their new Ambush ANGi, Specialized prove that existing designs can indeed be developed and updated successfully. The Ambush secures our coveted “Best in Test” badge!
