ABUS MonTrailer ACE MIPS
In the past, ABUS was known primarily for its locks. Now the German security expert also wants to protect your head having recently launched a whole range of bicycle helmets. The MonTrailer ACE MIPS is its high-end model in the MTB category which comes with a number of interesting features. ABUS incorporates structural reinforcement, combining it with five outer polycarbonate shells, which are firmly attached to the EPS core, which is topped off with a MIPS system. While a semi-enclosing plastic ring makes for easy adjustments, the 4-point strap system with its magnetic buckle looks extremely tidy.
The ABUS MonTrailer is very well-constructed and includes bottom edge protection. ABUS show great attention to detail here and has even thought about riders with ponytails. The ACE version of the MonTrailer also features a clever breakaway camera-mount unit, which is designed to detach in the event of a crash to prevent the camera from causing injuries. It takes a little while to get used to the “exotic” look of the MonTrailer and we have to admit we’re still struggling to adjust to the transparent visor. This, however, offers ample adjustment so you can easily place your goggles underneath it on the uphills. Goggle-compatibility is rounded off by a goggle strap groove at the back of the helmet. However, at 439 g, the ABUS is the heaviest helmet in test, which you really notice while riding. On top of that, the MonTrailer tends to get pretty hot – the ventilation could do with some improvement.
