The ION VANE_AMP in Detail
Sporting a similar silhouette to the clipless RASCAL, the ION VANE_AMP also features the same raised inside support to protect your ankles but minus the Velcro strap on the upper part of the shoe. The SupTraction Rubber Sul FL (flat pedal) sole has been designed to provide the ultimate grip on the pedal, seeing a division between the mid-zone for the pedals and the grip zones. The less aggressive, low profiled pedal mid-zone should grip well on the flat pedals, while the areas on the ball of the foot and the heel zone enable great traction off the bike.
For a flat pedal shoe the question of stiffness has to be tackled, and ION claim that the VANE_AMP deliver a banging mix of stiffness and flexibility. It’s sufficiently stiff on the longitudinal axis to keep stable on the pedals, but it also weaves in a requisite amount of flex for comfortable movement of the foot when you succumb to walking. Along its transverse axis, the shaft and outsole on the VANE_AMP control how the foot moves on the pedal without excessive tilt. Then there’s the toecap that shares the same design cues as the clipless RASCAL model.
