In its latest iteration, the Formula Selva S is still an intriguing underdog. With its 35 mm stanchions and travel options between 120 and 170 mm, it relies on the Italian manufacturer’s proven technologies, while the unusual purple finish is a real eye catcher. But can the 160 mm trail version hold its own against the competition?

The Formula Selva S is a prime example of Italian craftsmanship: stylish, distinctive, and packed with technical features. The Italian brand leans into its signature design, offering the fork in a striking purple finish as well as classic black. Priced at € 1,440, the Formula Selva is available in two versions: the Standard (120–160 mm) and Extended (160–170 mm), both of which employ 35 mm stanchions. We tested the Standard version with 160 mm of travel, which tips the scales at 2,093 g.
The Selva S allows you to adjust the travel internally without the need for additional parts. All you have to do is remove the air shaft and adjust its length using spacers. Unfortunately, there’s no integrated fender mount, meaning you’ll have to secure one with zip ties. Another drawback is the 160 mm brake mount. Such small rotors are now outdated, and the Formula Selva S casting only supports up to 200 mm discs, as spacers allow for just 40 mm of additional spacing.

Alongside the Selva S, Formula offer the Selva C with coil spring, and the Selva R, which relies on two air chambers. All models share the same damping technology with Formula’s CTS (Compression Tuning System).
Formula’s CTS is an innovative solution for adjusting the compression damping of the Selva S. It allows you to easily tune the compression using different small, interchangeable inserts at the top of the damper unit. These inserts control the oil flow, affecting the fork’s damping characteristics. Changing them is pretty easy and requires only a small tool that comes standard with every fork. Two CTS inserts are provided as standard, and there are eight different variants available for purchase at € 60 each, the perfect feature for tinkerers and everyone who loves to fine-tuning their suspension. Most of our test riders used the gold CTS insert, known as the “golden middle ground.”
Formula have several videos on their website in which they explain exactly how to perform adjustments and service the fork– nice! The rebound dial has 21 clicks of adjustment, while the compression has 12. However, there are some minor drawbacks during setup: the compression adjuster is quite small and hard to operate with gloves, while the markings for compression and rebound can be confusing since they only use plus and minus signs. The Selva S also features an adjustable lockout, which is a nice little touch, but not really necessary for a fork with this much travel.

The Formula Selva S mtb fork on the trail
The Formula Selva S impresses on the trail from the get go by consistently sitting high in its travel. The fork inspires plenty of confidence, offering excellent control over the front wheel and thus allowing you to focus entirely on the trail ahead without diving too deep into the travel. This comes in handy especially in steep trail sections, where the composed, tall front end adds to the sense of security. However, this also affects your riding position, so it’s important to take this into account when setting up the bike – adjusting stem spacers, for example, can help.
To unlock the full potential of the Selva S, you’ll have to actively weight the front end, because its firm feel demands an active riding style. Riders with the strength and skills to actively maneuver the bike will be rewarded with dynamic performance. You can confidently guide the bike over roots, rocks, and drops, while keeping your line with great precision. The fork really shines with fast, consecutive hits and big drops, providing plenty of support while remaining composed and inspiring confidence in the process. Even in fast, flowing sections with deep compressions, the Selva S provides excellent support, allowing you to push aggressively without the fork bottoming out. This makes it a particularly good option for aggressive riders.
In terms of sensitivity, however, the Selva S can’t quite match the butter-smooth plushness of the RockShox Lyrik or the FOX 36. Compared to these two forks, the Selva S requires more physical effort and favors a decisive riding style. But those who actively engage with the bike and apply pressure to the front wheel to navigate tight corners, will appreciate the fork’s reserves, especially on rough, challenging terrain. On gnarly trails and fast descents, it’s more likely that the rider hits their limits before the Selva S does – the fork has plenty of reserves that make sticking your line easy. While it doesn’t absorb bumps as effortlessly as some competitors, it offers a high level of control.
Conclusions about the Formula Selva S mtb fork
The Formula Selva S not only turns heads with its Italian flair, but also delivers strong performance on the trail. It’s designed for experienced riders who appreciate fine-tuning and personalized adjustments. The Selva S is a fork for those who like to actively engage with their bike, rather than just being along for the ride. It offers the sort of composure you want to have on fast, rough trails, and always remains predictable. However, it requires a committed rider who wants to get the most out of it.
