FOX’s Factory forks with their iconic gold Kashima coating are not only real eye-catchers but have long set the benchmark for MTB suspension. This year, the entire lineup has been revamped, and the brand-new GRIP X cartridge brings a significant innovation specifically for trail bikes. We put the FOX 36 Factory GRIP X fork through a thorough test.
FOX brings fresh updates to the lineup! The FOX 36 now features the new GRIP X cartridge, which replaces the previous FIT4. It offers the same adjustment options for low-speed rebound as well as high- and low-speed compression, but with a greater emphasis on trail performance. Climbing hasn’t been forgotten either: the final position of the HSC locks out both compression circuits, creating a firm mode for uphill sections.
The compression and rebound labeling is clear and straightforward, which makes the setup easy. The rebound offers 17 clicks of adjustment, low-speed compression 16 clicks, and high-speed compression 15 clicks. Each adjustment click is distinct, and the printed setup chart values for pressure and rebound are generally spot on. At 1,973 g, the FOX 36 Factory GRIP X is the lightest fork in the entire test but also the priciest in the trail segment at €1,450.

The FOX 36 comes with – unsurprisingly – 36 mm stanchions and is available in various versions: there are two chassis options, two stanchion coatings (Kashima and Performance), and three different damper cartridges. While in theory each cartridge can fit into any fork, FOX’s lineup specifies which combinations are available for purchase.
The GRIP X (optimized for trail bikes, as in our test) and GRIP X2 cartridges (for maximum downhill performance) are the two top options, both priced the same. The GRIP cartridge is significantly more affordable and comes in the entry-level Performance and Rhythm models, with the latter also featuring a budget-friendly chassis. The FOX 36 is available in the signature Fox Orange and Black, along with a limited-edition anniversary model in Gold.
With the 180 mm brake mount, the fork can accommodate rotors up to 220 mm – great, even for a trail bike. It’s equipped with the Kabolt X thru-axle, available in both quick-release and Allen key options. FOX offers its own mudguards that bolt directly onto the fork. The mudguard comes in two lengths, so you’re prepared for all weather conditions.
The FOX 36 Factory GRIP X mtb fork on the trail
Hitting the trail and experimenting with the settings quickly reveals that the low-speed compression (LSC) has a significant impact on how high the fork sits in its travel. Adjusting the LSC allows you to perfectly dial in the fork’s ride height, providing just the right amount of support to tackle roots, rocks, and compressions with ease. This makes it quick and simple to adapt the fork to your body dimensions, personal preferences, or even specific trail conditions.
The FOX 36 Factory GRIP X fork showcases outstanding responsiveness: it opens instantly with even the smallest impacts, hugging the ground to provide an extremely smooth and controlled ride over root carpets and other minor bumps. This ensures the front wheel remains in contact with the ground, giving you a high level of confidence. No other trail fork can quite match the FOX here. When the trail gets rougher, the FOX 36 Factory GRIP X delivers a more damped feel up front compared to the RockShox Lyrik Ultimate. While it’s less active, it offers more support—especially on bigger hits—and provides predictable suspension behavior.
The new GRIP X cartridge is a major upgrade from the previous FIT4, delivering excellent trail performance, even though it emits a slight “slurping” noise on larger drops. For riders seeking an extra bit of performance for their trail bike, the FOX 36 is also available in a GRIP X2 version, which provides even more traction—at the same price. Among trail forks, the FOX 36 Factory GRIP X narrowly claims the win over the RockShox Lyrik Ultimate.
Conclusions about the FOX 36 Factory GRIP X mtb fork
