The Lab: Granite ROCKnROLL-Multitool in review
In the “The Lab” we present the latest products and put them through their paces for you. Some undergo long-term tests, while we check others out only briefly. This time we reveal how the Granite ROCKnROLL-Multitool fared.
You may not have heard of Granite Designs, but they have some great innovative products that make working on your bike that little bit easier. The new Granite ROCKnROLL multitool does things a little differently. Rather than folding all their tools into a tiny package, the multi tool features a mini-ratchet wrench and bits that cover most bolts on the bike. The 9 bits include 7 of the most common Hex bits, 2 mm, 2.5 mm, 3 mm, 4 mm, 5 mm, 6 mm and 8 mm, and also the essential T25 and Phillips PH2 screwdriver. The bits are made from S2 alloy steel, said to be tougher than Chrome Vanadium, and of course are a universal fit so if you lose one, or need something specific for your bike, you could substitute one from a hardware store.
In use, the neat case is not quite as packable as the smallest multi-tools, and you do have to spend a few seconds assembling it before use, but once ready to go, the ratchet makes working on ‘hard to reach’ bolts a breeze. Removing bottle cage bolts with the cage fitted becomes less purgatory than with an awkward multitool, and when fitted with the 8mm bit the ratchet has even proven tough enough to free off pedals. In fact the ratchet is rated to 60Nm which is roughly equivalent to a 60kg person standing on the end of a 10 cm lever attached to the ratchet – we did not test this. The tool roll has a neat loop on the back which can be used with their ROCKBAND Carrier strip, allowing you to carry a tube too, and can be brought in either black or this very cool camo. There is even a space for a replacement chain link. After 4 months of daily stashing and occasional use, the Cordura tool roll has proven very tough. The only issues compared to the best multitools is that you will still need to carry a separate chain tool, meaning this is not a magic bullet for trail side repairs.
In terms of handling, a smooth ratchet is infinitely nicer to use than a stubby folding tool. However, the lack of a chain tool means the Granite ROCKnROLL Multitool is not the ‘one tool’ to do everything.
