We have already explained how to tune the spring characteristic of a RockShox Pike to your personal needs. Today we show you how you can customize the air chamber size of a Fox Float CTD shock to suit your weight and riding style.

Each bicycle manufacturer spends (before the presentation of a bike) a lot of time working with suspension experts, finding the correct tune for the bikes suspension characteristics. Nevertheless, it can sometimes happen that the performance of the shock is not perfect for every rider.

For some the rear is too progressive, not using enough of the suspension travel, with the shock chopping through too quickly and not giving not enough feedback from the ground.

If you are having problems with your shock performance, you can easily adjust the characteristics by adjusting the air chamber volume of the shock. If your shock is too linear, it is advisable to reduce the air chamber volume, if it is too progressive and does not use much suspension travel, the air chamber volume should be increased.

We will now walk you through this process, and show you how it works with a “Air Spring Volume Tuning Kit” by Fox.





How to:

Zu Beginn muss als erstes sämtliche Luft aus dem Dämpfer abgelassen werden.
To start the process you have let out all the air from the shock.
Nun sollte sich der Dämpfer von Hand öffnen lassen. Ist dies nicht der Fall kann mit einem Bandschlüssel nachgeholfen werden.
Now the shock should be able be opened by hand. If it is too tight use a strap wrench as a bigger lever.
Die Luftkammer muss nur einige Zentimeter nach hinten geschoben werden, das komplette entfernen ist nicht nötig.
The air chamber only has to be pushed back a few centimeters, it is not necessary to remove it completely.
Der Sicherungs-Shim wird nun ebenfalls auf der Kolbenstange etwas nach vorne geschoben
The Volume Spacer is secured with a small shim, this one just had to be pushed forward a little bit on the piston to gain access to the spacer.
Der Volumenspacer sitzt im oberen Teil des Dämpfers.
The Volume Spacer sits on the upper part of the shock, If you are seeking a more linear feel and there are no spacers left to remove, then another air chamber must be purchased to enlarge the volume of shock.
Er kann einfach nach herausgezogen werden.
But if there is a spacer in the air chamber, it can be easily be pulled down and out.
Das bei Fox erhältliche Tuning Kit beinhaltet Spacer verschiedener Größe. Anhand des demontierten kann, je nach gewünschten Effekt, die Größe des neuen Spacer gewählt werden. Mehr Progression = größerer Spacer
The Fox Tuning Kit includes spacers of different sizes. More progression = larger or more spacers, less progression = removed spacers.
Der neue Spacer wird eingesetzt und nach oben geschoben.
The new spacer get’s inserted and pushed upwards.
Im Anschluss wird er dann mit dem Sicherungs-Shim fixiert.
Following this, the spacer is locked in place using the Security Shim.
Um eine optimale Schmierung und Top Performance zu gewährleisten sollte nun das beiliegende Fox Fluid in die Luftkammer gefüllt werden.
To ensure optimum lubrication and top performance, the included Fox fluid should be applied to the air chamber.
Um das Zusammenschrauben des Dämpfers zu erleichtern empfiehlt es sich die Zugstufe komplett zu schließen. Im Anschluss kann der Dämpfer wieder montiert werden.
To make it easier to screw the air chamber back on the shock the rebound should get closed completely. After the air chamber has been screwed on again the shock can now be re-inflated to the desired air pressure.
