IXS XACT Full Face Helmet Review – Affordable Protection

In grass roots enduro racing, many riders are switching to the increased protection offered by full face helmets. We have been checking out the new affordable IXS XACT which blends increased venting with an affordable price tag, perfect for those who frequently use their head as a brake.

The new IXS XACT is based on the impressive IXS XULT full face helmet, winner of our Design & Innovation Award 2016, but with a reduced specification to bring it in at a far more wallet-friendly €159 (£119). Targeted at the enduro rider and racer the shell is manufactured from an injection moulded ABS shell and tips our scales at 1007 g for a size M/L. The thick padded liner is removable for washing and we like the inclusion of IXS’s EPR system allowing the cheek pads to be removed quickly if the worst should happen and your helmet has to be removed by medical personnel (you can also whip them out for long uphill climbs on race stages). VORTEX venting features channels to boost airflow over the head, and the helmet is available in 5 colour options and meets the European EN1078 and more stringent American ASTM DH and C.P.S.C standards. For those with mini shredders, the XACT is also available in an XS youth option for heads in the range of 49-52 cm.

After 2 months of testing, we were impressed with the IXS XACT, for the price it offers a great blend of comfort, security, and performance. The 1007 g weight feels fine on the head and everyone liked the padding which gives a firm but very comfortable grip on the head, without any distracting bobbing around. The simple double D-ring clasp is tried and tested and allows quick removal or adjustment. While a number of small crashes and being bounced around in the back of the van has shown the shell to be very durable, the finish feels a little more plasticky than other (albeit more expensive) helmets. We really liked the helmets compact design and it feels very balanced and unrestrictive when fully pinned. The face opening is wide and we had no issues with goggle compatibility from all the major brands. We were impressed with the venting, it’s not the best in class but better than most at the price point and we had no issues on warm summer days. One thing we were not sure on was the stubby visor, claimed to increase the field of view for racing or jumping while also decreasing leverage in a crash, the aesthetics polarized the test team and many preferred the longer peak of the more expensive IXS XULT. The adjustable visor is still big enough to avoid looking like you are ‘rocking the bullet’, and certainly has a great field of view if you struggle with your current visor. The IXS XACT feels secure and well made and allowed us to ride at speed with full confidence.

As with all helmets, the fit is the most important characteristic, but if it fits the compact and affordable IXS XACT is a great helmet for enduro racing or general braaping around in the woods. Well vented and comfortable we could not fault the performance but the stubby visor is an acquired taste for those who love moto styling.
