Michael Vanos and Vanessa Thompson claim the 2015 elite series wins at the Fox Rollercoaster #Enduro NSW/ACT State Round 5, hydrated by CamelBak at Stromlo Forest Park on Sunday. Ben Cory and Cara Paton take home advantage elite race wins in the 200-rider strong field. The event concluded the 2015 series, which had more than 500 riders compete in the popular mountain biking format of un-timed transitions to the starts of various timed race stages.
Stromlo Forest Park with its many trail options was the ideal venue for the series finale of the Fox Rollercoaster #Enduro events, hydrated by CamelBak. Organisers from Rocky Trail had put on three timed stages, which featured some of the most popular trail sections of the park. More than 200 riders from NSW, the ACT and VIC competed at the event and not only the elite categories saw local riders take full advantage of racing their familiar home tracks.
In the elite men’s, Ben Cory from Kambah (ACT) dominated the race stages and finished in a total time of 12:46 min, which was 10 seconds of one of his strongest comeptitors and GIANT team mate and fellow Canberran, Tim Eaton. Graeme Mudd from Newcastle (NSW) was a close third ahead of Anthony Elliot from Wallaroo (+30 sec) and Thomas Crimmins from Bredbo (+32 sec).
Canberran Cara Paton took out the elite female category with two unbeatable race runs out of the three that had to be completed. In the end, Paton won with a gap of 24 seconds ahead of Kellie Weinert from Campbelltown, the reigning RedAss Downhill NSW State Champion. Becc Wyatt from Sydney came in third (+25 sec) ahead of Vanessa Thompson from Yanderra (+39 sec) and Stacey Birch (+1:12 min).
With over 50 competitors, a quarter of the field competed in the Expert (B-Grade) categories. Iain Morrison from Blaxland won in the men’s and Port Macquarie’s Chrissie Abel took out the women’s classification on the day as well as the overall series win. In the men’s a fourth place resulted in the overall Expert series win for Shane Gillet from the Central Coast.
In the elite categories, Michael Vanos from Faulconbridge and Vanessa Thompson took out the Fox Rollercoaster #Enduro NSW/ACT State titles. “[This was] a great series. Thanks very much, Rocky Trail, looking forward to next year”, said Vanos, who like Thompson competed in all five series events.
In the women’s, Mondraker racer Kellie Weinert was second in the series overall ahead of Joanne Fox from Emu Heights. In the men’s, Brett Pople from Cessnock is the runner-up with Canberran Chris Martin in third.
The organisers from Rocky Trail confirmed that the series will return in 2016. For detailed results, visit rockytrailentertainment.com.
