News | IXS release new full-face helmet, the XULT

Developed alongside ex-downhill superstar converted enduro racer, Cedric Gracia, the XULT takes advantageous properties from traditional full-face helmets, moving away from becoming yet another bulky, un-ventilated presence on the protective equipment scene. IXS conceptualizes downhill protection with open-face ventilation, using their trademarked Vortex™ aeration system, integrated Xrail™ absorption unit and twinned with FRP™ (fibre reinforced structure) – which they state has improved comfort and safety.

Classified as a “Cross Over Full-Face Solution”, the addition of extra air ventilation improves consistent airflow, seemingly moving towards the needs of enduro style riding and racing. One immediately noticeable, or otherwise flawed concept that reverbs this idea is reduced rigidity in the shell due to the increased ventilation. IXS state that the FRP™ shell is designed to increase strength while also reducing overall weight of the helmet, which in turn, minimizes shell volume and reduces rotational force, helping prevent severe concussions in the event on an impact. Eagerly awaiting proof of this, we don’t necessarily want to smash our heads into tree’s, but we wouldn’t mind seeing the XULT in test.

Taking the popular material used in their knee pads, X Matter, and inserting them at major impact zones, mean the helmet absorbs more contact than traditional EPS alone. Whilst ensuring safety, an ergonomic padding system ensures comfort without inhibiting air flow using anti-bacterial Coolmax™ material which wicks moisture away from skin to keep you dry and comfortable.

Weighing 1100g and meeting the European EN1078 and American C.P.S.C standards, the XULT slap-bangs itself around the heavier end of other full-facers. Comparatively, the Bell Super 2R and MET Parachute weigh both 694g and 700g, so are considerably lighter, but aren’t as well ventilated. We’ll just have to wait and see how this one pans out…
