The Review | Mavic Crossmax XL Pedals
Some products we test make themselves conspicuous due to their poor performance, the ones that break or let us down. However there are some products that often go unnoticed, not because they disappoint us, but because they perform so well they give us no cause for concern. One such product is the Mavic Crossmax XL pedal, after over 3000km of hard riding, 4 EWS races and over 100,000m of climbing they have never let us down
The €160.00 Mavic Crossmax Xl pedals build on the established and popular Time ATAC design, with two non adjustable stainless steel springs offering a positive retention. If you want to reduce the float of the pedal you have the option of running the cleats in a left or right configuration to chose either 13 or 17 degrees of foot rotation depending on the orientation. The body offers just enough platform to guide cleat placement in rough terrain and is made out of carbon reinforced nylon.
Our Impressions
We have found the Mavic Crossmax XL’s exceptionally reliable and predictable. When clipping in there is a firm clunk that signifies a positive engagement while retaining a comfortable level of float. When jumping, hucking or simply messing around, the pedals offer a secure and predictable connection to the bike. After over 3000km of use through a tough Scottish winter we haven’t had to service the bearings once, and the pedals still spin smoothly without any bearing run or play. The carbon reinforced Nylon bodies are looking hammered, with numerous gouges, impacts and rock strikes – a sign of a good life. They have shrugged off the abuse well and are still intact and offer just enough platform should you accidentally unclip in crazy terrain. The retention bars are starting to look worn and have started to flatten out but everything is still working perfectly. We cannot argue with the €160.00 price tag as we have experienced exceptional reliability from the Mavic Crossmax XL and they have become a firm favourite.
