The Review: Crank Brothers Y-series Trail Tool
US Based company Crankbrothers have been making trail tools for years in the traditional form. But this new Y-series tool caught our attention when sent over a couple of months ago. Since then we have been putting this thing seriously through its paces during UK trail rides and Enduro events.
There are three types of the Y-series tool, with the Y16 version (seen here) being the most expensive one with the best fitted tool uses. This features a chain tool, C02 inflator, 2 spoke wrenches, phillips and flat screwdriver bits, t-25 & t-10 torx bits and finally hex wrenches of 2, 2.5, 3, 4, 5, 6 + 8mm.
Out on the trail this is a very simple and innovative tool, admittedly it takes up a tad more room than a lot of your average trail tools and at 260g it’s no lightweight. But with the longer handle reach of the bits and especially the very impressive chain tool no bolt or awkward chain link is ever too tight, as this thing just undoes them with a powerful long leverage.
The Co2 inflator (cartridges not included) has been put to its uses many a time and works well, one time Jim didn’t press the tool onto the valve enough and the rubber seal blew itself out, but after a lesson learnt this has never been a problem since.
The box of torq and driver bits has a simple foam cover which holds the bits in place, but be careful where you open this on the trail, as the small bits can easily disappear forever in thick undergrowth!
The ease of removal of each separate tool from the inside or around the triangular plastic body is simple, as the plastic is pulled apart and the grip it has keeping the tools attached and in place is very impressive.
We feel this Y-series trail tool is a great innovative idea that is a must-have for any self respecting trail regular, nothing is awkward or hard to use and it will definitely be a constant companion on all our test rider’s adventures from now on.
