The Review | VAUDE Exire Advanced RC Mountain Bike Shoe

Lightweight, stable and well ventilated – we certainly ask a lot from our mountain biking shoes, and for good reason, performance is crucial. Then if we are being really picky, they should really match the bike in some way. For this year’s long-term test bike, the All-Mountain SCOTT Genius 900 tuned, Manne wasn’t in the market for a classic MTB racing shoe, instead he set his sights on some that wouldn’t object to a spot of walking. Decision made, he settled on the VAUDE Exire Advanced RC with a white and red colour scheme.

Since springtime the VAUDE Exire Advanced RC have been put through the wringer with filthy, wet conditions as well as the current heat at the height of summer. With the airy mesh at the front of the food, ventilation is really effective – a relief given the summer’s high temperatures. One flipside to the ventilation though is that rainwater quickly enters the shoes, which unfortunately disqualifies the Exire Advanced RC from being an all-year shoe. Once hit by a summer downpour though, it doesn’t take too long for the soaked shoe to dry off.

The fit of the shoe is suitable for regular and wide feet, but they will perhaps verge on too wide for narrow feet. While still guaranteeing that any power exerted into your pedaling will be effectively transferred to motion, the stiffness doesn’t impede on comfort and it’s possible to walk in the shoes for short distances. The perforated insole ensures your feet are further ventilated, and prevents any unpleasant smells from developing.

The rubber end cap offers decent toe protection against trail debris and merges well into the underside of the shoe. The sole has been made from one piece, so there are no joining sections that could potentially rip. Aside from that, the manufacturing of the shoe in its entirety gives no room for complaint. Even after five months of intense riding, the shoes barely show any signs of wear and tear.

Conclusion:
The VAUDE mountain biking shoes, the Exire Advanced RC, present a great fit for regular to wide feet, and are particularly suited to the warmer and drier months thanks to their effective mesh ventilation. The shoes’ stiffness has nailed the compromise between comfort and the effective power transfer from the pedals, which renders the Exire Advanced RC the ideal footmate for more recreational long-distance riders who value durability.
