First Look: VP Harrier Flat Pedal 2015
As pedal and shoe technology improves, many riders are making that switch back from clips to flats, enjoying the feel and fluidity that flat pedal riding brings. With the market now full of innovation, a pedal has to offer something very special to stand out! When it comes to choosing a pedal, most riders look for a thin platform allowing them to lower their center of gravity on the bike and reduce pedal impacts, pedals also need to be grippy, light, supportive and most of all durable. The newly announced VP Harrier pedals offer all those properties with a large, grippy platform, very thin profile, and weight in at only 362gms per pair, impressive indeed!
VP has been manufacturing pedals for over 30 years and you can see a lot of that experience in these pedals! Normally to achieve a super slim pedal you have to move the bearing outboard, resulting in an unsightly bulge that can be annoying when riding. VP have avoided this problem with the use of a IGUS bearings, allowing the pedal to fit flatter to the crank without a bulge, while still retaining a low profile 12mm body and a generous 120mm x 110mm platform!
With an easy to access external lock nut on the outboard side, the spin tension of the pedal can be adjusted. If the pedal develops any play, a quick tighten of the locknut will get everything spinning smoothly again. The replaceable pins are well located to provide protection for the the pin heads, allowing for easy removal should a pin become damaged, and with 10 heat treated pins per side, they should offer tenacious grip when paired with shoes designed for flat pedal use.
VP Components have shown their interest in Enduro and All Mountain riding, sponsoring the EnduroFest, and these pedals seemed well targeted at riders looking for a balance of high performance and weight! The new Harriers will available in the spring, in black, red and silver and should retail for around $120
