The Lab: Leatt DBX 4.0 Helmet in review

In the “The Lab” we present the latest products and put them through their paces for you. Some undergo long-term tests, while we check others out only briefly. This time we reveal how the Leatt DBX 4.0 Helmet fared.

Full-face helmets are often heavy and hot, but they offer the most protection. The Leatt DBX 4.0 isn’t only for downhillers and freeriders though, being “cool” enough for Enduro riders too. Weighing only 869 g, the helmet has a lot of vents and channels that efficiently dissipate heat build-up in the helmet. The Leatt DBX 4.0 is available in four sizes. The padding is thick and ensures a tight fit. An extra thick pad on the neck prevents the DBX 4.0 from sliding down and blocking your field of vision. The huge side pads prevent the helmet from twisting and press your head far back into the shell of the helmet. Nevertheless, thanks to the soft upper material, the pads don’t chafe or create hot spots. If you want to be in compliance with the rules of an enduro race on the climbs, you can remove the cheek pads for better ventilation. Even the removable mouthpiece in the chin guard is easy to clip out. The Leatt DBX 4.0 works very well without the screen.

Compared to the classic double-D closure of many full-face helmets, the magnetic Fidlock clasp on the Leatt is super easy to use with one hand. Although we can’t recommend it for style reasons, the DBX 4.0 can also be combined with normal glasses or sunglasses thanks to clever cut-outs around the temples. However, it is made primarily for use with goggles. Unfortunately, the visor isn’t adjustable, so you can’t “park” them under the visor. In the case of an emergency, the visor breaks away easily from the helmet thanks to special plastic pins to avoid aggravating your injuries. Apart from that, you’ve got two different density foams to ensure optimum shock absorption. Leatt’s proprietary 360° turbine pads are designed to minimise rotational forces. All this adds up to a helmet that is ASTM downhill certified despite its light weight.

The Leatt DBX 4.0 not only offers a lot of protection, but it’s also very comfortable to wear. Smart features make it Felix’s first choice for shuttle days and enduro races. His conclusion, even on hot days: I’ll keep it on.
