The Lab: Dakine Apex Backpack Long Term Review

For over six years, the Dakine Apex backpack has been my die-hard companion on foot and on two wheels; in fact, I very rarely leave the house without this 26-litre backpack on my shoulders.

The compartments of the Dakine Apex backpack are just as well suited for days out in the wilderness (with food supplies, raincoat, and tools) as they are for getting me through the working day. A 14″ laptop fits easily while the two side pockets and expandable organizer pocket provide extra space for chargers, headphones, and other bits and pieces. My sunglasses are safe in the fleecy pocket on the top – ideal!

In terms of production quality, there’s very little room for complaint, especially when you consider how long it has already lasted. While the seams, zips, and straps are still in great condition, the top bit of the back section is starting to fray in parts.

Speaking of the back section: the Dakine Apex has a winning fit and great ventilation most of the time, but once the backpack is heavily loaded then the air channels at the back are compressed and the heat starts to build up noticeably.

Please note: obviously the tested model Dakine Apex backpack from 2009 isn’t available anymore, but we are hopeful/confident that the current version of the Apex is equal as durable and well made!
