Flat pedals are not only designed to grant your shins some scars, but also to ensure better grip and a secure bond to the bike. The Specialized Boomslang pedals succeed on these two points: they’ve got a roughly 108 x 110 mm platform, and eleven super-grippy pins – plus four in reserve in case any break. The concave design means the Boomslang is just ten mm thick in the middle. Its bearings have made it through the first twelve months without any serious signs of play, although we have had to tighten the left pedal once (and that needed a special tool and finesse). If you’re someone who regularly removes pedals, then take note of the enclosed pedal washer – it’s crucial when mounting the Boomslang, as otherwise the pedal’s body is likely to cause pressure against the crank and therefore won’t turn. It’s irritating if you forget; tester Antonia can vouch for that after scouring a car park for said washer. While the Specialized Boomslang pedals weigh in at a pretty substantial 440 g and their € 149 price tag also puts them in the higher price category, it’s worth considering their superb grip, clever design, and long lifespan before writing them off.
