Scotland-based editor Trev has had a bit of a torrid love affair with the latest SRAM Roam 40 wheels. He loves their smooth and accurate steering and compliant ride, but has grown tired of the poor bearing life. SRAM have worked hard on the ride characteristics of their wheelsets and that really shows on the trail: braking traction, stability and cornering feel are all top notch, until … After only 400km, the rear wheel bearings died, resulting in lots of play, a liberal amount of swearing and a trip to the workshop. Stripping down the Double Time hub revealed that the inner faces of the main bearings are not weather sealed, and water and grime were ingressing from inside the hub (it happens!). A replacement kit was fitted as Trev could not source a suitable, double-sealed alternative, and at 720km he is seeing play develop again. This is not ideal and Trev called SRAM to find out what was going on. SRAM are aware of the issue and are about to roll out a new bearing with a grey internal weather seal that should dramatically improve the reliability of the Double Time hubs.
