From precarious-looking leather strap contraptions to flimsy polystyrene basins, helmets have become a staple safety and style accessory for riders. Consequently, we weren’t surprised to find ourselves geeking out at EUROBIKE over the coolest lids around. For 2017, the biggest brands are all launching new models and colour schemes, plus the odd undeniable bit of innovative design. Here’s the run-through:
POC Octal X
Based on the hugely popular Octal road cycling helmet, from spring 2017 onwards POC will launch their lightweight, open-facer XC helmet with the same name. Wide openings are a cert for great airflow, and the design includes aramid bridge reinforcements for strengthening and a thicker molding at the front for additional protection.

Alpina MYTHOS 3.0
The indomitable Alpina bestseller, 2017 will see the millionth sale of a MYTHOS helmet, so we aren’t surprised to see that Alpina haven’t strayed from its tried-and-tested fit for the latest redesign. However, the back section now drops lower to provide even more protection. The new MYTHOS 3.0 should still be incredibly well ventilated and light despite now sporting a touch more material. The helmet tips the scales at 250 g, and come in three sizes for a respectable € 89.95. Still sporting the same attention-grabbing BLUE EPS foam as the bold green colourway, there’s also a model with matt colouring for € 99.95, going by the name MYTHOS 3.0 LE.

With the 360° Boa system, the lightweight 630 g lid is effortlessly compatible for riding with goggles and even certified for use on the Enduro World Series. It retails for a pretty hefty € 229.95.
